New campaign responds to rising mpox cases in Western Australia

6 July 2026

The Department of Health has launched a campaign encouraging sexually active people to be aware of mpox and take steps to protect themselves and their partners.

Running from July to September 2026, the campaign aims to increase awareness of the risk of mpox transmission and promote vaccination, testing and safer sex practices among people at higher risk of exposure.

While previous mpox cases in WA occurred among men who have sex with men (MSM), recent cases have been notified in heterosexual men and women. The virus can spread through close physical or sexual contact and can affect a broad range of sexually active people.

Most people with mpox recover within 2 to 4 weeks, but symptoms can be uncomfortable and may include a rash or lesions, fever, swollen lymph nodes, headache and muscle aches.

Vaccination is an effective way to reduce the risk of infection, and anyone who is experiencing symptoms or is concerned about possible exposure should seek medical advice and get tested.

Campaign messages will be delivered through targeted advertising across social media, dating apps and regional radio.

If you have symptoms, call your GP or the sexual health helpline:

Perth metro: 089227 6178

Regional WA: 1800 198 205.
