A new statewide strategy to eliminate rheumatic heart disease
A new statewide strategy to eliminate rheumatic heart disease
14 August 2026
The WA Rheumatic Heart Disease Strategic Framework 2026-2036(Strategic Framework) (external site) has been released, outlining a coordinated approach to eliminate acute rheumatic fever and new cases of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in WA by 2036.
Developed in collaboration with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, clinicians, researchers, government agencies and community representatives, the Strategic Framework provides a roadmap to improve prevention, care and outcomes through Aboriginal-led approaches and equitable access to services.
The Strategic Framework aligns with the national RHD Endgame Strategy and focuses on 5 priority action areas:
- Aboriginal leadership
- Community-based programs
- Healthy environments
- Early prevention
- Care and support
RHD remains a preventable condition that disproportionately affects Aboriginal people and communities. Preventing acute rheumatic fever and ensuring timely diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care are essential to reducing the burden of disease.
The Strategic Framework provides a foundation for clinicians, researchers, policymakers and communities to work together to strengthen prevention efforts, improve access to culturally safe care and support people living with RHD.
By working together, we can create a future where RHD is no longer part of WA’s story.
