New needle-free influenza vaccine
New needle-free influenza vaccine
2 October 2025
From 2026, children aged from 2 to under 12 years can get the influenza vaccine without the needle. It’s a gentle nasal spray called FluMist that protects kids just like the injectable influenza vaccine – but without the stress or tears.
What is FluMist?
FluMist is a quick and painless nasal spray. It uses tiny amounts of weakened influenza virus to help the body build protection. It works just as well as the injectable influenza vaccine and has been approved for use in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
Who can get FluMist?
FluMist will be available to children aged 2 to under 12 years across WA. It’s a great option for kids who are anxious about needles.
Some children with certain medical conditions might still be advised to get the injectable influenza vaccine – your immunisation provider can help you choose the best option.
FluMist may become available to other age groups, depending on regulatory approval. If you're interested, talk to your doctor or immunisation provider.
Do you need a prescription?
If your child is eligible, they can get FluMist without a prescription.
If your child is accessing it privately, they will need a prescription.
How much does it cost?
FluMist is free for children aged 2 to under 12 years.
